Reviews (6-10)

5 out of 5: Superior news magazine
Reviewer: laurabee8
As a graduate student in international relations, this is simply essential reading. The economist provides a broad range of coverage, and is unafraid to criticize when necessary. Periodic special reports are worth pulling out to save for future reference, as reprints cost $4.95. With the additional free access to full content on the website with your subscription, the seemingly high subscription price is actually a bargain. Even for the non-specialist in the field of international affairs, this is great reading. Unlike most domestic news magazines, this is serious news coverage from cover to cover; economist magazine is simply the best.

5 out of 5: If you had to choose only one
Reviewer: GEORGE R. FISHER (Boston MA United States)
Everybody knows that to become and remain even minimally educated you must read the Economist every week without fail. But the editors make it so damned difficult ... there's always one must-read special section but all too often there's more than one. I don't know how they can get so much good copy written, so regularly; but they make the duty of reading it all awfully difficult.

5 out of 5: There is a reason it costs $219 a year
Reviewer: Owen Hehmeyer (Princeton, NJ)
They can charge that much because it is a superior publication in every regard. They have to charge that much because there are very few ads. I do not deign to call this publication a magazine. It is more a chronicle of current issues and the relevant data. It is extremely heavy on fact, and I find myself better informed on many issues than other periodical readers. The Economist's point of view is neither that of an American liberal nor that of an American conservative, but rather a particularly British liberalism, one more akin to classical liberalism. Both Democrats and Republicans are bound to be challenged when encountering data and perspectives in this publication. This publication is the most globally focused I know, covering the US, UK, Asia, the Middle East, Technology, Business, Finance, and more very thoroughly. American readers will be delighted by the wry British humour scattered about in picture captions and stashed away in articles. If you want to find real data, and not just read op/ed pieces, this is a great publication, written for you, the intelligent generalist.

5 out of 5: Forget TV, forget radio, forget all other news sources
Reviewer: Christian Buckley (Washington State, United States)
Economist magazine has been my news source for years. So intelligent, witty, and always interesting random topics. Even their book review sections guide most of my other reading! I recommend an economist subscription highly.

5 out of 5: World Class
Reviewer: Peter Kenney (Birmingham, Alabama, USA)
The economist is a weekly publication with principal editorial offices located in London. It provides an interesting and refreshing view of recent events and trends. Geographically the magazine covers the world but also has separate sections focusing on Asia, Middle East and Africa, United States, the Americas, Europe and Britain. Special reports and surveys on such topics as Iraq or American politics are regularly featured. I recommend the economist in particular for the high quality of its superior writing and reporting.

5 out of 5: Read it, and be smarter
Reviewer: Steve Teller (Winnipeg, Canada)
As many other reviewers have already said, this is THE magazine. It is a newspaper (albeit on a macro level), a political primer, a science journal, an arts review, an economic/finance tutorial, and much more. It is incredibly dense - a typical issue is over 100 pages, and is primarily words, supplemented with descriptive charts and graphs, not fluffy half-page pictures like in many other magazines. However, despite its length, it never is burdensome to read. All articles are written for the "intelligent layperson", which means you always come away from an issue knowing a bit more about a whole bunch of subjects. If the economist magazine replaced Time magazine as the leading periodical in North America, IQs would go up 20 points.

5 out of 5: Simply Magnificent!
Reviewer: A magazine reader (Winnipeg, Canada)
The economist magazine is one of the finest news/business magazines out there. I use to subscribe to three other such periodicals but this smart, timely, and utterly competent publication has weeded them all out. Highly recommended for those who believe in substantiated reason instead of dogmatic emotion.

5 out of 5: Absolutely a Must-Read Weekly
Reviewer: Soo-lian Chia "sporebookworm" (Singapore)
I got hooked onto The Economist magazine approximately a decade ago. The weekly has since been staple reading for me and believe it or not, when I do not have time to read the local newspapers in any detail, The Economist more than make up for this in its wide news coverage. It is a constant companion on my daily subway rides and yes, each article is short, succinct and not to mention, extremely well-written. There is the occasional biasness in a few of its articles but generally, it is a far more objective newsmagazine than what you will normally find in other weeklies. The Surveys are extremely good with a wide range of topics. That also provides food for thought and discussion. Overall, the magazine has improved from its past dowdy appearance to one that is more colourful and snazzier without compromising on quality. I tried to wean myself off the economist magazine twice but eventually missed it so much that I resumed my economist subscription for blocks of 3 years!

5 out of 5: The surveys are fantastic
Reviewer: Brian Campbell (Brookline, MA USA)
Most everything about this wonderful magazine has been said in other reviews. I particularly love the surveys on different subjects that they have in about half the issues. They are always just so amazingly comprehensive and well researched, and I have learned a great deal from them. I would recommend Economist magazine to anybody with half a brain.
